Matt was first introduced to drumming at the age of 10, and decided to take up lessons with a local teacher learning to play & read drum music.
Throughout his teenage years, Matt gained further education and valuable playing experiences helping to shape him into a ‘musical’ and sensitive drummer & percussionist. Experiences included the school bands & orchestra’s, City of Leeds run groups including the Leeds Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra and also sessions with the Leeds University Big Band (at aged 14!).
Matt changed drum tutors at the age of 13 moving to Paul Smith who began working on his technique and overall playing taking him back to basics. This approach helped to develop Matt’s playing and helped mould him into a more rounded, and more technically able drummer.
At the age of 17, Matt took up an additional post in one of the North’s most popular and sought after Soul & Motown bands, based in Halifax, giving him a great exposure to the classic Motown sound – a style which he still loves and plays today.
University was calling at aged 18, and Matt went to study percussion with Opera North’s principle percussionist, Chris Bradley, at Huddersfield University whilst continuing private lessons with Paul.
After leaving the University in 1999, Matt continued studies with Paul Smith, co-founded a new Function Band (Bare Faced Cheek) and continued his rhythmic journey including dep work with many other local bands from rock/pop, to blues/jazz and beyond.
Matt has also sought tuition from one of the finest drummers & percussionists (in particular, Latin Percussion) around. He has spent time with Dave Hassell working on Jazz & Latin including furthering his technique. “There’s always something new to learn, and always a better way to do it – usually, someone else is doing it and you think ‘why didn’t I think of that?’ You’re never too old to learn and develop, and it’s important for all musicians to learn from their peers and fellow musicians”, says Matt.
Today Matt continues to play with a varied range of talented bands & musicians. He has continued developing his passion for Jazz & Motown music, and has recently had the pleasure of playing with Motown Legend Miss Martha Reeves, Soul Legend Jaki Graham, Candi Staton, Alexander O’Neal, Laura White (of X-Factor 2008 fame), blues player Steve Phillips (of Notting Hillbillies fame), Peter Jones (of X-Factor fame), Andrew Roachford, Ricky Valance, Chip Hawkes, Angie Brown, Katrina Leskanich (of Katrina and the Waves fame) and continues to play with the hugely talented musicians on the local circuits.
Matt has been involved in the Charity Dreamgirls which was founded by his wife Kate since 2007. He holds a position on the committee of this organisation, and is often found playing in the band for the Charity Dreamgirls events – the Soul & Motown Allstars.
